Reinstall Windows

Reset this PC reinstalls Windows and lets you keep or remove your files. Use it before you reach for a USB installer.

1. Back up anything you need. Reset can remove apps even when you keep files.
2. Open Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC.
3. Choose Keep my files to remove apps and settings, or Remove everything for a clean start. Removing everything is the right choice before you sell the PC.
4. If Windows will not start, use the recovery environment (hold Shift while you select Restart) and open Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.

Write down the BitLocker recovery key before a clean install. You can be asked for it, and the install cannot skip that prompt.
