Help for accounts in Windows

Windows can sign in with a Microsoft account, a work or school account, or a local account. Settings shows which one the current profile uses.

  1. Open Settings > Accounts > Your info. The page names the account and whether it is a Microsoft account.
  2. To switch users, select Start > your account picture > Switch user, or press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and choose Switch user.
  3. If Windows asks for a password you no longer use, choose Sign-in options on the lock screen and try a PIN, fingerprint, or security key.
  4. If you recently changed the Microsoft account password, connect to the internet on the lock screen (the network icon) so Windows can accept the new password.

A BitLocker recovery prompt is not a password prompt. It asks for a 48-digit recovery key from the Microsoft account that turned protection on.
