Surface will not turn on or wake

  1. Connect the official power supply and wait at least ten minutes. A drained battery can look completely off.
  2. If there is a charging light on the connector, note the color. Amber or white usually means it is receiving power. No light suggests trying another outlet before you assume the device failed.
  3. Force a restart: press and hold the power button for about 20 seconds, release, then press power again. Two-in-1 models may also use the volume-up plus power combination described for that model.
  4. If Windows starts but loops, use recovery from a USB created on another PC.

Model-specific button combinations differ. Check the steps for your Surface model before holding buttons at random.
